Best movies and TV shows on Amazon Prime

Amazon is continuously adding new movies and TV shows to its Prime video streaming service, and each week, we'll bring you the best it has to offer!

In this week's selection of films and shows on Amazon Prime, a documentary follows a group of citizen journalists in the city of Raqqa as it is ruled by ISIS. An anthology series explores the real-world origins of some of our more horrifying stories and legends, including tales of hauntings, vampires, and werewolves. Finally, a group of kids stumble upon an adorable sea monster named Sigmund, who they decide to help hide from a sea monster hunter who threatens Sigmund and his family.

  • City of Ghosts - This documentary tells the story of a group of journalists living in the Syrian city of Raqqa, who work underground and under constant threat of death to themselves and their loved ones in order to get the word out about the tragedies befalling Raqqa under the rule of ISIS.
  • Lore - Season 1 - This new anthology series based off of the popular podcast of the same name takes a look at real-life events that have inspired some of our most horrific folk stories. The show uses a mix of dramatic reenactment, animation, archival materials, and narration in order to tell horrifying stories.
  • Sigmund and the Sea Monsters - Season 1 - This children's series follows two brothers and their cousin as they become friends with a young sea monster that they find on the beach. The monster, Sigmund, learns from the kids about the world of humans while the kids work to keep him and his family safe from a sea monster hunter.

Looking ahead

This week's new additions to Amazon's Prime Video lineup begin with Fight for Space, a documentary that explores the origins of the Space Race in the 1960s and 70s, as well as the spirit of exploration and discover it engendered in an entire generation. There's also the third season of Amazon original series Red Oaks, which follows the country club workers as they have moved on to new chapters in their lives. Finally, check out The Wall, a psychological thriller about two American soldiers pinned down by an enemy sniper with only a crumbling wall for protection.

  • Fight for Space - This documentary takes a look at the Space Race in the 1960s and 70s and how it shaped the lives of a generation of young and aspiring scientists, engineers, and more. The doc explores why the race happened in the first place, and how we might be able to restore the spirit of wonder and exploration that the Space Race inspired. Arrives October 18.
  • Red Oaks - Season 3 - Set in the summer of 1987, Season 3 of this Amazon original series continues to follow the lives of the Red Oaks crew, including David and Wheeler, who are now working in New York, as well as Nash and the incarcerated Getty. Arrives October 20.
  • The Wall - Two American service members find themselves pinned down by an enemy sniper in the hot Iraqi desert, with only a crumbling wall for protection. The new must find a way to survive not only their enemy, but the desert heat and their own straining psyches as well. Arrives October 20.
